ARTS OF GESTURE IN LATERAL TIME AND QUESTIONS OF TRANSMISSION

In her talk Arts of Gesture in Lateral Time and Questions of Transmission, Rebecca Schneider will lift out key concepts from a current book project on gesture titled Standing Still Moving: Arts of Gesture in Lateral Time. Thinking about gesture as a means of amongness, wit(h)ness, and besideness in time-based arts, Schneider will explore the idea of bodies and objects as cross-temporal, gestural, and composed in and as recurrence. When not only biological bodies but objects moving in geologic time are approached as inter(in)animate agents that gesture, call, and respond, how might ideas around arts transmission and conservation change?
To take up this question, in an open conversation she will refer to a 1998 text by Indigenous leader Robert Joseph of the Kwakw!!ka’wakw Nation of the Pacific Northwest of Turtle Island titled “Behind the Mask” from Beyond the Shimmering Sky (which will be read in depth during the Performatorium Book Club preceding the talk). We will think together about how gesture, body jumping, and dance might be considered modes of memory and ethics of response-ability.

Rebecca Schneider is Professor of Modern Culture and Media at Brown University. The author of Performing Remains: Art and War in Times of Theatrical Reenactment (2011) and The Explicit Body in Performance (l997) among other books and over 50 essays, she is completing a digital book Standing Still Moving: The Arts of Gesture in Lateral Time. She was named a Guggenheim Fellow in 2021 for an ongoing research project titled Shoaling in the Sea of History.

Im Rahmen unserer TQW Research Affiliation teilt auch Rebecca Schneider ihre Gedanken zu sameness/difference und den Zeitlichkeiten von Wiederholungen in einem diskursiven Rahmen.
In ihrem Vortrag Arts of Gesture in Lateral Time and Questions of Transmission wird Rebecca Schneider Schlüsselkonzepte aus einem aktuellen Buchprojekt über Gesten mit dem Titel Arts of Gesture in Lateral Time aufgreifen. Indem sie über die Geste als Mittel der amongness, wit(h)ness, and besideness der zeitbasierten Kunst nachdenkt, wird die Performancetheoretikerin die Idee von Körpern und Objekten als Zeiten-übergreifend, gestisch wie auch in und als Wiederauftauchen komponiert untersuchen. Wenn nicht nur biologische Körper, sondern auch Objekte, die sich in der geologischen Zeit bewegen, als inter(in)animierte Agent*innen betrachtet werden, die gestikulieren, rufen (call) und antworten (response), wie verändern sich damit die Vorstellungen der Überlieferung und Bewahrung von Kunst?
Um sich dieser Frage in einem offenen Gespräch zu widmen, wird Schneider sich auf einen Text des indigenen Anführers Robert Joseph von der Kwakw!!ka’wakw Nation aus dem pazifischen Nordwesten von Turtle Island mit dem Titel Behind the Mask (in Beyond the Shimmering Sky, 1998) beziehen (der in einem dem Vortrag vorausgehenden Performatorium-Book Club gelesen wird). Wir werden gemeinsam darüber nachdenken, wie Gesten, Körper-Springen (body jumping) und Tanz als Formen der Erinnerung und als Ethik der Ver-antwort-ung (response-ability) betrachtet werden können.
